Provides students with the opportunity to conduct a Quality Improvement Project in a health care organisation under the supervision of academic staff. The student can conduct this project using a variety of methods depending on their area of interest.
|Objectives||The purpose of the course is to give students practical experience with a small scale project in a health care setting.
The objectives are for students to:
1. Demonstrate the ability to think critically about published reports of quality improvement projects;
2. Select from a number of options, an appropriate project for a health care setting or appropriate analysis methods for previously collected data;
3. Consider and, if appropriate, incorporate information from the literature into the design of the project;
4. Select or design appropriate measures/ instruments if necessary;
5. Collect, or supervise the collection of reliable and accurate data;
6. Summarise and appropriately present the data;
7. Discuss the results and implications for quality improvement in the health care setting;
8. Discuss the results in the context of a recognised Quality cycle.
|Content||Students may elect to do 1 of 2 types of project culminating in the production of a report that discusses the results, relevance and implications of the project for quality improvement in the health care setting.
1 Proactive project involving the development of a Quality Improvement Project in a health care setting including - gaining approval for the project, literature review, project design, instrument design, data collection, data analysis, development of recommendations and evaluation of the impact of the project in the organisational setting.
2 Reactive project involving the conduct of a statistical analysis of previously collected quality-related data including - location of data suitable for the project, gaining approval for the project and access to data, literature review, define a research question, data analysis, answer the research question, development of recommendations and evaluation of the impact of the project in the organisational setting.
It is proposed to include a component about critical appraisal of published Quality Improvement Reports. Although critical appraisal is a component of a first year course, it does not focus specifically on this kind of publication. This exercise will assist students to think critically about the quality of published Quality Improvement reports and consider these issues in the process of producing their own report when the project is completed.
