ObjectivesThe knowledge presented will help prepare fellows, who normally have a prior background in the social sciences, to contribute the social science component of 'transdisciplinary' public health research in general, and clinical epidemiology research in particular. Transdisciplinary research draws together in a common framework concepts and methods from different disciplines, including biomedicine, in order to develop a more comprehensive explanation of health problems and to specify points at which the most effective intervention can occur to break the process that leads to disease. Thus, health social scientists need to be prepared to undertake research in collaboration with epidemiologists, biostatisticians, health economists, and other members of interdisciplinary health research teams.
