Personal Development and Health Issues in the Primary School

This course aims to extend students' knowledge and skills in selected areas of the K-6 Personal Development and Health syllabus. In particular this course will explore personal development and health concepts that are contained in the PDHPE syllabus strands of Interpersonal Relationships, Growth and Development, Personal Health Choices and Safe Living. There will be an emphasis on teaching sensitive issues such as sexuality, emotional and mental health, child protection, grief and loss.

Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
* Describe the purpose and principles of effective strategies in teaching sensitive issues in the Personal Development & Health strands of the PDHPE syllabus in schools;
* Analyse their own experiences, attitudes and values which may affect their teaching of sensitive and controversial issues:
* Demonstrate general guidelines for answering difficult questions about sexuality;
* Describe the historical and social factors that have shaped attitudes towards sexuality in western society and how changes in attitudes have affected individuals;
* Describe sexuality over the human lifespan, with an emphasis on childhood and adolescence;
* Identify and describe available methods of contraception;
* Describe physical, psychological and social changes in adolescence;
* Identify age-appropriate sexual play and behaviour in young children;
* Describe the process of conception and childbirth;
* Analyse current and controversial issues in sexuality and reproduction;
* Identify the main types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and their symptoms;
* Understand the concept of sexual identity, describe the diversity of sexual identification and strategies for dealing with sexual discrimination;
* Describe current mental health issues for children and adolescents and signs and symptoms of mental health problems;
* Identify factors which act as risk or protective factors in the development of mental health problems in children;
* Define resilience and connectedness and describe strategies to enhance these in children;
* Demonstrate the application of an appropriate framework for considering school-wide strategies which aim to promote positive mental health in children;
* Discuss the importance and role of skills in communication and conflict resolution for children;
* Analyse the personal and professional impact of child protection legislation and policy and describe strategies for teaching about child protection;
* Describe reactions to loss and change over the lifespan, and strategies for assisting children in dealing with grief and loss, war and terrorism;
* Identify and utilise appropriate resources to plan consultation with school community (parents, teachers, other key players) and teach potentially controversial issues;
* Describe a range of teaching, whole school and wider community strategies that will enhance the health and wellbeing of children.
