This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the concepts which are important in the public health and health promotion fields. This course will introduce future health professionals to contemporary public health and health promotion issues including: definitions and components of health; health status indicators and outcomes; epidemiological terms and principles; approaches to health promotion and illness prevention; health behaviour change strategies; health/illness care systems; current issues in local national and international health.

Objectives On satisfactory completion of this course, students will be able to:
* Explain the components and social determinants of health and health-related behaviour;
* Recognise and explain basic epidemiological terms and principles of measurement and health status indicators;
* Analyse the main methods of measuring the needs of populations;
* Compare and contrast models and approaches to health behaviour change;
* Evaluate the role of Health Promotion in reducing illness and improving the health of individuals and populations;
* Analyse local, national and global health issues.
