This course is not part of an APAC accredited sequence. In this course, students will obtain detailed knowledge of communications in the allied health care industry. Content will include interpersonal communications between mental and physical health care providers and patients/clients, communications between allied health care providers, and communications between health care professionals and the community. Students will be introduced to models and theories of health communications. However, the course will focus more on the application of health communication skills to real-world practices. Real-world situations include explaining complex and intrusive medical and psychological procedures, explaining risk of life-threatening illnesses, obtaining informed consent, patient adherence to medicine/treatment, and discussing treatment options with health professionals from other fields. Students will develop knowledge and skills to aid in more effective communications with patients/clients, working with allied health professionals, and working with the community on health issues.

| Content | This course will provide background knowledge of health communications models, theories and practice. Students will learn to differentiate communication styles by situation and intended outcome. Emphasis will be placed on developing students’ skills in applying communication skills to a variety of challenging situations related to the allied health field. | ||||||||
