Introduction to Abnormal Behaviour
Students gain an introductory understanding of the nature of abnormal behaviour, including aetiology and classification of disorders of the mind. Also includes methods of behaviour evaluation and an introduction to therapeutic orientations and applications.
Forms part of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council's accredited sequence.

1. Demonstrate knowledge of the relationships between psychology and psychiatry with a focus on evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of abnormal behaviour and diseases and disorders of the mind.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the therapeutic orientations and applications;
3. Apply the knowledge gained in the course to the real world by learning to identify clinically relevant information;
4. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles underlying behaviour modification programs and their practical application
5. Build experience in the ethical and practical aspects of research in psychology using human participants.
PSYC2500 is aimed at both psychology and other health professional students, and will introduce abnormal behaviour in its many forms.
Students will gain an introductory understanding of the nature of abnormal behaviour including aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders.
The lectures in this course have a strong focus on knowledge of a variety of commonly encountered mental illnesses, and utilise the real world experience of the lecturers to illustrate how these illness may present.
Students will examine a number of behavioural categorisations including developmental disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, substance-use disorders and stress and health.
