On successful completion of the course students will:

1. Have an introduction to the relationships between psychology and psychiatry with a focus on evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of abnormal behaviour and diseases and disorders of the mind.
2. Have gained exposure to therapeutic orientations and applications;
3. Have applied the knowledge gained in the course to the real world by learning to identify clinically relevant information;
4. Have been given the opportunity to participate in a behaviour modification program and to see the practical application of behaviour change skills.
5. Build experience in the ethical and practical aspects of research in psychology using human participants.

PSYC2500 is aimed at both psychology and other health professional students, and will introduce abnormal behaviour in its many forms. Students will gain an introductory understanding of the nature of abnormal behaviour including aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. The lectures in this course have a strong focus on knowledge of a variety of commonly encountered mental illnesses, and utilise the real world experience of the lecturers to illustrate how these illness may present. Students will examine a number of behavioural categorisations including developmental disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenia, personality disorders, substance-use disorders and stress and health.
