POLI4004 must be studied in conjunction with POLI4001; POLI4002; and POLI4003 and together constitute the full Honours program in Politics. The Politics Honours program is the culmination of undergraduate teaching in the discipline of Politics. It enables students who have distinguished themselves in Politics at the undergraduate level to continue advanced studies in politics and political analysis. As such it forms an introduction to the world of international scholarship and research. The principal teaching style will be through seminar studies and thesis supervision.

ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate:
1. detailed understanding of specific issues and concepts relating to an aspect of their chosen field of political science study;
2. detailed knowledge of materials and sources relating to these issues;
3. an ability to undertake extended research at Honours level through the planning, preparation and submission of a research based thesis;
4. skills in critical analysis appropriate for Honours level activity.
ContentThe Honours program in Politics consists of three inter-related elements which are designed to provide the student the opportunity to explore in greater depth interests developed during their undergraduate degree. POLI4004 is the second half of the third element, namely the research and presentation of a thesis topic. It will involve the student pursuing research for a thesis with an appropriate supervisor on a topic within their chosen field of political science. The student will be required to undertake independent research, guided where appropriate by directed readings, consultation and feedback from an assigned supervisor. Together with POLI4003, this course accounts for 50% of the final grade of the Politics Honours program.
