1. Clear understanding of the various theoretical concepts and ideas that feature in the political make-up of Asian and southeast Asian states.
2. An ability to distinguish between various political systems and political practices within the Asian/Southeast Asian region.
3. An awareness of the complexities of the Asian/Southeast Asian region and Australia's role within it.
4. An awareness of and ability to assess critically the theoretical and methodological debates in the field of comparative politics.
5. Develop an understanding of key Social Science concepts and theories and acquire research skills to enable critical evaluation of the reliability, validity and efficacy of information, opinions and arguments.
6. Provide an understanding of and practice of various communication skills.

This course examines political change in Asia. This involves a comparative study of selected Asian countries, focussing on issues which may include: colonialism, the rise of nationalism and the creation of new nation-states, gender and Asian politics, and the emergence of a distinctively Asian capitalism in the region.
