Modern communication systems such as the internet are based on advanced fibreoptic components such as Bragg gratings, circulators, filters, couplers, isolators and microstructured optical fibre. These are the building blocks of photonic circuits, the optical performance and reliability of which depend critically on their mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. This industrially relevant course covers issues relating to a photonic component performance and manufacturing.
In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this compulsory course component in the course outline provided by the school.
On successful completion of this course, students will:
1. be able to understand the design and operation of fibre optical components;
2. be able to understand manufacturing issues in the photonics industry including the significance of quality and reliability control in fiber optical components.
