Physiotherapy Clinical Practice II

Neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy clinical practice and reasoning in which students integrate theory and practical skills in the assessment and treatment of patients in a health care setting under supervision. This course involves full-time clinical practice and the management of a case load comprising neurological or cardiopulmonary clinical problems.

This course is Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy program.

Limited availability of specific clinical placements may necessitate some students undertaking PHTY3030 placements in other areas of physiotherapy practice.

ObjectivesAs a result of successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
1. competently clinically practise in the neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy area across the lifespan and from acute to chronic contexts;
2. take an appropriate history and perform a proficient physical examination of a patient presenting with a neurological or cardiopulmonary clinical problem;
3. correctly interpret the clinical examination findings;
4. select and safely apply an appropriate evidence-based intervention for a patient presenting with a neurological or cardiopulmonary clinical problem;
5. select and apply appropriate outcome measures and adapt or progress management on the basis of outcomes;
6. effectively employ preventive and educational strategies;
7. apply skills in clinical reasoning in conducting the clinical examination and making clinical decisions in neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy;
8. communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, care givers and other members of the multiprofessional health care team for optimal total care of the patient;
9. demonstrate an awareness of ethical and cultural issues in the neurological or cardiopulmonary clinical setting;
10. demonstrate professionalism and an understanding of the role of the neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapist.

Content1. supervised clinical practice experience in a neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy clinical setting
2. clinical application of skills in history taking to neurological or cardiopulmonary patient problems
3. clinical application of physical examination skills to neurological or cardiopulmonary patient problems
4. clinical application of intervention skills to neurological or cardiopulmonary patient problems, including treatment modification and progression
5. clinical application of clinical reasoning skills, including making appropriate assessment and management decisions
6. clinical application of oral and non-verbal communication skills
7. clinical application of written communication skills, including documentation of patient data
8. direct experience working in a neurological or cardiopulmonary health care team and contributing to the team
9. the role of the neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapist
10. clinical application of skills in safe and evidence-based neurological or cardiopulmonary physiotherapy practice
11. skills in self review and peer review of clinical performance
12. health professional behaviour and responsibilities.
