Pharmacotherapeutics 3

Presents the pathophysiology of diseases and their management including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Specific diseases covered in this course include neurology and mental health. The course will address the quality use of medicines in the treatment of these diseases. Application of the knowledge developed in this course will be complemented by clinical skills training. Case-based oral assessment will further develop communication skills that will assist with professional practice as a pharmacist. Development of this knowledge and skill base contributes to the core competency required of a pharmacist.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and must be passed in order to progress in the Master of Pharmacy Program.

Programs generally have defined periods for their professional education placements. These are based on negotiations between health providers and the University. Students are asked to note however, that placements may occur at any time during the calendar year and not just within defined placement periods or university terms. The timing of your placement will depend largely on the availability of placement opportunities within health services sector. Students MUST NOT organise their own placements without prior approval by the Program Convenor.

Objectives
At the end of this course students will:
1. Be able to describe the pathophysiology and management of neurological and mental health disorders;
2. Be able to describe the quality use of medicines issues surrounding the therapeutic agents in the treatment of these diseases and the pharmacological mechanism of action of these agents;
3. Have developed clinical skills in the therapeutic management of these conditions;
4. Continue to develop oral communication skills.
Content
This course will cover the pathophysiology, pharmacological mechanism of drug action,therapeutic treatment and practice issues in the management of:

1. Neurological disorders (including headache, seizures disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and pain management)
2. Mental health disorders (including anxiety, schizophrenia, depression, drug addiction, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and sleep disorder


The course will also provide experience in developing clinical skills by clinical skills training and or clinical placements.
The course will also include visits to hospital and community pharmacies and students will be required to deliver case presentations.

PHAR6011 Pharmacotherapeutics 3 20 units.
Transition
This course will be taught for the first time in 2009. Students who are required to repeat PHAR6011 will be provided with specific lectures, tutorials and self directed learning material by both didactic and on-line modes of delivery.

Each examination component will test a student's competency in one or more of the course objectives since these form part of the core competencies required of a pharmacist. To be awarded a pass mark or better for the course, a student must show they are competent in the course objectives by passing the combined written examination components(mid term and formal examination) and pass overall.

Students must satisfactorily complete the placement and/or clinical skills training during this course. This will be determined by satisfactory completion of their placement workbook, reflective journal and preceptor appraisals.
