Molecular Pathogenesis

10 Units 6000 Level Course

Available in 2013

Callaghan Campus Trimester 1

Previously offered in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009

Introduces students to the molecular basis of disease and drug response. As knowledge of the genetic basis of disease increases so does the opportunities for drug targeting and patient specific-treatments. This course considers the two key elements - the genetics of disease and the genetics of drug response (pharmacogenomics).

Objectives Students should:
1. Have a fundamental understanding of the molecular basis of disease;
2. Understand the molecular determinants of drug response;
3. Understand the molecular basis of cancer therapeutics;
4. Understand the impact of biotherapy on therapeutics, pharmaceutical industry and society; and
5. Gain basic understanding of the ethical issues related to the use of biotherapy.
Content 1. Drug targets
2. Genomics
3. Proteomics
4. Pharmacogenetics
5. Pharmacogenomics
6. Monoclonal antibody therapeutics
7. Peptide-based therapeutics
8. Nucleic Acid therapeutics including anti-sense and gene-therapy
9. Cell-based therapeutics
10.SNP analysis
11.Ethical issues arising from the use of biotherapeutics
