Pharmacy Practice 4

Considers aspects of pharmacy practice including a systematic review of over-the-counter medicines and complementary medicines;
Drug addiction and misuse;
Disease management to achieve optimal health outcomes;
Dispensing and counselling techniques; and
Placements to pharmacies in the community to gain an insight to the practice of pharmacy.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and must be passed in order to progress in the Master of Pharmacy.

Programs generally have defined periods for their professional education placements. These are based on negotiations between health providers and the University. Students are asked to note however, that placements may occur at any time during the calendar year and not just within defined placement periods or university terms. The timing of your placement will depend largely on the availability of placement opportunities within health services sector. Students MUST NOT organise their own placements without prior approval by the Program Convenor.

Objectives
Students should:
1. Develop knowledge and skills in the appropriate use of over-the-counter products;
2. Understand the issues of the drug addiction and factors which impact on the intentional misuse of medicines;
3. Further develop skills on medication management with the aim of optimising health outcomes
4. Develop an appreciation with the use of Complementary and Alternate Medicines.
Content
1. The concept of minor illness and major disease and the use of OTC products
2. The use of OTC products for illnesses of the Musculoskeletal system, minor infestation of the body and the gastrointestinal tract
3. Drug addiction and intentional misuse of medicines-harm-minimisation
4. Dispensing skill development, including extemporaneous dispensing and counselling techniques
5. Complementary and Alternate Medicines
6. Visits to community pharmacies and health care units involved in the management of people with drug addictions.

Students must achieve a passing grade in the final examination component (written and oral) and extemporaneous dispensing and all other assessment items to obtain a passing or higher grade in this course.

Students must satisfactorily complete the placement during this course. This will be determined by satisfactory completion of their placement workbook, reflective journal and preceptor appraisals.

Students must demonstrate competency in the theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills which form part of the core competencies required of a pharmacist
