Human Genomics and Biomolecular Analysis for Pharmacy

10 Units 6000 Level Course

Available in 2013

Callaghan Campus Trimester 2

Previously offered in 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008

Represents a blend between fundamental concepts and current issues in molecular medicine. Focuses on the relationships between structure, function and analysis of proteins and nucleic acids as applied to human disease and provides an introduction to modern concepts of genomic structure, function and analysis arising from the Human Genome project.

Objectives At the end of the course, students should have an understanding of:
1. the nature of biopharmaceuticals and the role of biomolecular technologies in their development and application
2. structural features of proteins and nucleic acids;
3. the inter-relationship between molecular structure and molecular function, and its relevance to therapeutics applications
4. the importance of molecular structure as it applies to fundamental biomedical analytical techniques;
5. new and emerging biopharmaceuticals and targets
6. human genomic structure, function and analysis;
7. basic Mendelian genetics;
8. basic population genetics
Content 1. Introduction to biopharmaceuticals
