Considers the formulation of solid dosage forms and sterile drug products. The stability of drug products and factors influencing the shelf life of products is included in this course. The material will be presented by lecture and tutorial format with practical classes developing dispensing skills. The skills acquired in this course form essential elements of the competencies for pharmacists.

Objectives

At the end of the course, students should:
1. Identify the principles of drug stability and discuss practice issues relating to storage of drug products.
2. Describe the formulation and manufacture of solid dosage forms and sterile drug products.
3. Understand the skills required in the preparation of pharmaceutical products

Content

1. The formulation of solid dosage forms, including tablets, capsules, implants, suppositories and pessaries;
2. Stability, including kinetics of chemical decomposition in solution and in the solid state;
3. Factors influencing stability and stability testing and prediction of shelf life.
4. Dispensing skills in the preparation of pharmaceutical products; and
5. Sterilisation of pharmaceutical products.
