This course will provide an introduction to surgical techniques, patient selection and management options and evaluation following surgery. The course will also address surgical selection, referral and informed consent; the skills and techniques for applying local anaesthesia; surgical/theatre skills. In addition the course will address nail surgery, the curettage of small lesions, biopsy techniques and postoperative management and follow up. Students will learn a range of advanced surgical procedures and when and how to refer patients for surgical consultation.
| Objectives | 1. Describe the techniques and principles of a variety of surgical procedures performed on the foot and ankle 2. Describe the principles of theatre protocol 3. Explain procedures relating to the nail and skin integument 4. Describe indications, contra indications and risks of basic surgical procedures conducted by podiatrists 5. Identify the medico-legal implications relevant to surgical procedures carried out by podiatrists 6. Demonstrate theoretical understanding of peri-operative management of the patient in relation to investigative techniques, pre-surgical preparation and post surgical management including physical, medico-legal and psychosocial procedures including post operative consequences and possible complications associated with basic and advanced surgical procedures 7. Plan post operative surgical management including pharmacological, orthotic and physical therapies 8 Demonstrate understanding of podiatric surgery as it relates to the paediatric patient 9.Describe effective fracture management of the foot and ankle. 10.Identify relevant infectious diseases with relation to mechanisms and consequences of transmission and maintaining patent and practitioner safety 11.Descibe lower limb surgical procedures associated with management of the high risk foot 12.Demonstrate the ability to work in a group setting 13.Demonstrate advanced clinical behaviour including; a.Professional ethics b.Written and verbal communication c.The integration of evidence based practice into clinical decision making d Assessment and conservative management of the high risk foot 14.Develop skills to perform all aspects of nail surgery |
