This is a pre-clinical course that provides an introduction to the clinical environment in Podiatry practice. Students will gain an understanding of the scope of practice of Podiatry and learn to apply evidence based practice to the clinical setting. Musculoskeletal anatomy of the foot and ankle and dermatology will be covered in detail. Students will also develop essential clinical skills including infection control and sterilization, learn to perform basic podiatric assessments and treatment and undertake observational placement.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Podiatry program.
ObjectivesAt the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe evidence based practice and how it is applied to the clinical setting in Podiatry practice 2. Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour and communication in a clinical setting 3. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the functional anatomy of the foot and ankle 4. Describe the structure and function of skin and know common dermatological conditions affecting the foot 5. Demonstrate adherence to appropriate infection control and sterilisation procedures 6. Demonstrate safe and appropriate basic clinical podiatric skills including general treatment and neurovascular and biomechanical assessment techniques |

1. Clinical Skills Assessment Practical and theoretical clinical knowledge will be assessed via an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). Assesses objectives 1-6
The exam is an individual assessment item that demonstrates a student's knowledge to practice safely, effectively and ethically on internal placement (objectives 1-6). Students who receive a mark of less than 50% for the exam will not meet the compulsory course component requirements for the course and they will be will be given a fail grade (FF) for the course. Remediation for this assessment item will only be provided if it is accompanied by an appropriate Adverse Circumstances application. 2. Clinical Sessions Attendance Assesses objective 2 Students are expected to meet the attendance requirements for clinical sessions. Students not meeting the attendance requirements for clinical sessions will not meet the compulsory course component requirements for the assessment item and will be given a fail grade (FF) for the course. No opportunity for remediation for clinical sessions will be allowed unless accompanied by the appropriate Adverse Circumstance documentation. This assessment is a compulsory course component and must be passed to pass the course.
Professional Behavior Assesses objective 2 Students must pass the professional behavior assessment in each clinical session. Assessment is based on the University Placement Policy (Policy000768) with specific reference to actions deemed as 'misconduct' and 'unprofessional' as defined by this policy and including observation of all policies and procedures set out by the University Podiatry Clinic in regard to all aspects of clinical practice. This assessment ensures students have appropriate knowledge and skills to behave in a professional and ethical manner on subsequent internal and external placement. No opportunity for remediation for professional behavior assessment will be offered unless accompanied by the appropriate Adverse Circumstance documentation.
