Description
ORHL2102 introduces students to the basic principles of pathology and bacteriology. The course integrates knowledge of oral structures and function to the recognition, diagnosis, assessment and management of common mucosal and salivary gland lesions, in both children and adults. It will also reinforce radiation safety and the principles and practice of dental radiography and radiology. This course is a compulsory program component and students must pass in order to demonstrate clinical safety and to progress in the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy program. Students are unable to enrol in Year 2 Semester 2 and Year 3 clinical courses until they have passed this course.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Describe pathologies that occur commonly in the oral environment;
2. Recognise pathologies that occur commonly in the oral environment;
3. Explain how oral pathology affects development, structure and function;
4. Analyse the potential impact of oral ill health on systemic health and vice versa;
5. Analyse the need for modification of an individual treatment plan with reference to mucosal and salivary gland pathology
6. Demonstrate the provision of appropriate advice and treatment for common minor oral pathologies.
7. Describe clinical competence in intra-oral and extra-oral radiography and radiology
8. Demonstrate clinical competence in intra-oral and extra-oral radiography and radiology

Requisite
This course is only available to students active in the B Oral Health Therapy (12390) program and have successfully completed ORHL1104, ORHL1105, HUBS1106 and HLSC1000.
Assumed knowledge
This course builds directly on, and requires that you have passed ORHL1104 and ORHL1105.
