Students will build on knowledge acquired in first year and apply this to the use of dental radiographs, including radiation safety. Student will learn to take and process analogue and digital, intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs. The emphasis of this course is on the analysis of quality of the radiographs taken.

Objectives

On completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Analyse and rationalise the need for intra-and extra-oral dental radiographs;
2. Take intra- and extra-oral radiographs of a clinically satisfactory standard;
3. Evaluate the potential impact of oral ill health on systemic health and vice versa with specific reference to osteoradionecrosis;

In addition, completion of the clinical component of this course will develop and consolidate the following clinical skills;

4. Demonstrate and apply the principles of infection control to the clinical situation;
5. Evaluate OH&S policies and procedures in any clinical situation;
6. Obtain and anlyse a detailed history from a patient;
7. Recognise situations that are beyond experience, competence or legal quidelines;
8. Identify tooth wear and determine aetiology;
9. Collect and assess dietary information;
10. Interpret a treatment plan and discuss the relative merits of restorative and prosthetic treatment options;
11. Evaluate the benefits and limitations of teamwork in oral health care;
12. Select and safely manipulate dental biomaterials;
13. Analyse the need for topical medications at community and individual level;
14. Evaluate the functions and adverse effects of drugs and medications used in oral health care.

Assumed Knowledge

This course builds directly on and requires that you have successfully passed ORHL1001 and ORHL1003 and assumes that you have successfully completed all Year 1 courses. The learning from this course will be developed and integrated with aspects of clinical care throughout the rest of the Bachelor of Oral Health program.

Assessment Items

Essays / Written Assignments	Summative Assessment Item 1. Critique of radiographs taken by student. Students are required to record 10 bitewing, 10 periapical and 10 panoramic radiographs, and critique against provided criteria. (assesses objectives 2 and 3)
Examination: Formal	Summative Assessment Item 2. 2 Hour short answer written examination during exam period. (assesses objectives 1 - 4)
