This course integrates the knowledge of dental occlusion and malocclusion with clinical assessment and management of malocclusion and impact of occlusion on oral health.
| Objectives | On completion of this course you should be able to: 1. Provide appropriate information and care for the orthodontic patient and community; 2. Remove orthodontic arch-wires, bands and attachments; 3. Take impressions and study models; 4. Describe contemporary orthodontic practice; 5. Describe the various elements of orthodontic therapy; 6. Describe the features and possible sequelae of dental occlusion and malocclusion; 7. Analyse how disease affects development, structure and function; 8. Analyse oral health needs of orthodontic patients; 9. Identify tooth wear and determine aetiology; 10. Discuss the placement and removal of orthodontic archwires, bands and attachments; 11. Discuss the methods and materials used to take impressions and construct study models; 12. Discuss presenting signs and symptoms of dental and orofacial pain; 13. Place rubber dam; 14. Place fissure sealants. In addition, completion of the clinical component of this course will develop and consolidate the following clinical skills: 15. Demonstrate and apply the principles of infection control to the clinical situation; 16. Evaluate OH&S policies and procedures in any clinical situation; 17. Evaluate data obtained from oral health indices and other research methods; 18. Obtain and analyse a detailed history from a patient; 19. Recognise situations that are beyond experience, competence or legal guidelines; 20. Analyse how disease affects oral development, structure and function; 21. Collect and assess dietary information; 22. Interpret a treatment plan and discuss the relative merits of restorative and prosthetic treatment options; 23. Evaluate the benefits and limitations of teamwork in oral health care; 24. Select and safely manipulate dental biomaterials; 25. Analyse the need for topical medications at community and individual level. 26. Evaluate the functions and adverse effects of drugs and medications used in oral health care; 27. Evaluate plaque control methods; 28. Discuss the need for, and methods of, mechanical removal of plaque; |
