Caries and Pain Control
Introduces students to principles and science of dental caries. This course will integrate the knowledge of the aetiology, pathology and progression of dental caries with clinical assessment and management. It will also look at aspects of pain control in Dental Hygiene practice.

1. Evaluate data obtained from oral health indices and other research methods and analyse the use of caries recording methods for realistic appraisal of treatment progress and outcomes;
2. Analyse how caries affects development, structure and function;
3. Explain the relevance of caries risk management theory to health maintenance and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental caries;
4. Discuss the strengths and limitations of fissure sealants;
5. Describe the properties and composition of fissure sealants;
6. Describe the materials used in preventive oral health practice;
7. Describe the uses of antimicrobial therapy in the management of dental caries;
8. Evaluate plaque control methods;
9. Analyse need for fluoride supplementation at community and individual level;
10. Administer infiltration and mandibular block anaesthesia
11. Demonstrate and apply the principles of infection control to the clinical situation
12. Evaluate OH and S policies and procedures in any clinical situation;
13. Obtain and analyse a detailed history from a patient;
14. Recognise situations that are beyond experience, competence or legal guidelines;
15. Collect and assess dietary information;
16. Analyse smoking cessation therapies
17. Evaluate the benefits and limitations of teamwork in oral health care;
18. Select and safely manipulate dental biomaterials;
19. Analyse the need for topical medications at community and individual level.
20. Evaluate the functions and adverse effects of drugs and medications used in oral health care

This course is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Oral Health program. Pre-requisite - successful completion of ORHL1001, ORHL1003, ORHL1004, HUBS1106, ORHL2001 and ORHL2007
This course builds directly on ORHL1001 and HUBS1106, and requires that you have successfully completed all Year 1 courses. The learning from this course will be developed and integrated with aspects of clinical care throughout the rest of the Bachelor of Oral Health program.
