ORHL1004 introduces students to theories of communication at individual and community levels. Using key oral health messages throughout the course, students will consider a range of methods to communicate with individuals and the community.

ObjectivesAs a result of successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

1. Describe theories of communication
2. Analyse the effectiveness of various communication strategies
3. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication with social and cultural sensitivity, with patients, carers and
team members
4. Describe the various roles and responsibilities of the Oral Health worker within the health care system and appreciate
the contributions of other members of the health care team
5. Describe the medico-legal, ethical and moral responsibilities of the preventive oral health worker
6. Describe the roles, responsibilities and obligations of members of the oral health team
7. Describe materials used in preventive oral health practice
8. Describe fluoride in oral health and determine the need for fluoride supplementation at community and individual
levels
9. Describe the use of topical medications in oral health
10. Describe fundamentals of nutrition in relation to risk assessment
11. Describe the effects of smoking on oral and general health in relation to oral health risk assessment
12. Analyse smoking cessation strategies
13. Describe the elements and purpose of a detailed clinical history
14. Demonstrate Oral Health Education strategies to groups and individuals
