Assessment of Oral Health Status

ORHL1003 introduces students to the assessment of oral health of individuals and communities. Students will be exposed to the common risk factor approach to assessment and introduced to the relationship between oral and general health. Students will commence preclinical and simulation activities with a focus of history taking and examination. Small group sessions will relate theory to practice.

Objectives
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Describe the social, cultural and environmental factors that contribute to health or ill health;
2. Describe the relationships between systemic disease, the management of such diseases and oral health (and vice versa);
3. Describe normal oral development, structure and function, and the processes of disease in the context of risk assessment;
4. Describe the aetiology of tooth wear;
5. Describe recording and measuring methods for caries and periodontal disease;
6. Take a thorough history;
7. Undertake a clinical examination;
8. Demonstrate Infection Control procedures in the clinical environment

This course builds on the theoretical knowledge from ORHL1001 and ORHL1002 to introduce students to clinical history taking, examination and risk analysis. It also underpins future ORHL courses in Years 2 and 3.
