Examines various methods of optimising safety in the workplace, in the context of technological developments and practices in relation to fire and explosion safety, electrical safety and environmental control, including noise and ventilation.

|Objectives||This course aims to:|
1. show the complex relationship between science, technology and safety;
2. explore the role of emerging technologies in OHS;
3. demonstrate the nature, scope and importance of communications and information technology;
4. encourage students to understand and appreciate the safety sciences through investigation, examination, interaction and environmental issues.
|Content||SAFETY SYSTEMS: |
Notion of a control system.
Open Loop and Closed Loop Systems.
Sense, Decide, Act model of a closed loop system.
Review of basic principles of electricity and electronics.
Analog and Digital principles and conversions.
Transducers and Actuators for Safety applications e.g. fire, smoke, gas, explosion detection. .
"Intelligent" Safety Systems: Automatic Detection of dangerous situations..
Electrical Safety and Electrical Dangers including static.
Intrinsically Safe electrical systems.
Design for noise isolation and insulation.
Machinery noise control for presses, machine tools, air exhaust, ventilating systems, forging machines, electrical motors, pumps, hoppers, chutes, gas furnaces.
Application of principles of airflow, openings, ducts, filters, fans.
Design techniques for general ventilation, dilution, ventilation, local exhaust ventilation.
Incorporation of other safety considerations in design,
e.g. for noise, fire and explosion risk.
FIRE and EXPLOSION SAFETY:
Classification of fires
Sources of ignition
Combustibility - properties of building and construction materials.
Building design for fire protection.
Fire detectors, alarms and suppression.
Firefighting equipment and systems.
Explosion risk assessment.
Suppression of explosion risk including plant layout.
