Transitioning into Occupational Therapy Practice

This course aims to form a bridge between professional learning in the undergraduate program and to facilitate the transition of the students entry into professional practice. This will be achieved through facilitating students evaluation of their practice education experiences, and synthesising this with theoretical learning gained throughout the occupational therapy program. This will include such factors as, contexts of practice, theoretical approaches, ethical and moral issues, political and legal contexts, and social and cultural influences. Additionally students will also appraise their current strengths and ongoing professional development priorities. They will have the opportunity to create work of their own choice that focuses on an area they wish to strengthen. Opportunities for choice of and attendance in advanced workshops will be presented.
On completion of this course students will be able to;
1. Evaluate their own professional practice.
2. Analyse and synthesise the impact of factors such as contexts of practice, theoretical approaches, ethical and moral issues, political and legal contexts, and social and cultural influences on their practice.
3. Articulate clearly their thinking and reasoning with respect to their evaluation of their practice.
4. Generate a personal and professional profile highlighting strengths and areas for continuing professional development (CPD).
5. Be proactive in their professional development through specific choices of study in these final weeks.
This course is process rather than content driven and is learner centered. The course will comprise a series of interactive workshops on topics including, contexts of practice, theoretical approaches, ethical and moral issues, political and legal contexts, and social and cultural factors. Published frameworks will be used as guidelines for students to generate their personal and professional profile. Practicing therapists and other related professions may be part of this course.
This is the culminating course in the last four weeks in the program therefore students need knowledge from all year one, two, three and four of the OT programme.
