Description

This course introduces students to the specialty of rural and remote practice in Occupational Therapy. The course is designed for students to:

- Gain a working knowledge of aspects of rural and remote issues that may impact on the development of community based Occupational Therapy services and;

- Explore the role (and potential role) of Occupational Therapy in public health and community development in rural and remote communities.

Learning Outcomes

1. Examine the cultural issues relevant to occupational therapy practice in rural and remote settings through discussion and apply these to: Occupational therapy role development relevant to a particular health issue, and programme implementation in a rural or remote setting

2. Analyse the factors associated with variation in the impact and implications of health issues between metropolitan and rural and remote settings through discussion of a particular health issue.

3. Compare and contrast identified issues relating to the development of occupational therapy practice in rural and remote settings and strategies and propose resources to address these through the example of program implementation in a rural or remote setting.

4. Apply knowledge of occupational issues affecting residents of rural and remote communities to; a specified health issue, and programme implementation.

Content

  1. Lectures: The lectures are designed to introduce key issues pertinent to the development of occupational therapy practice in rural and remote settings. They will consider issues such as, cultural issues relevant to rural and remote practice, issues affecting the occupational choices and participation of residents of these communities, professional issues affecting occupational therapists in rural and remote settings, service development issues.
  2. Tutorials: Tutorials will provide the opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the issues through exploration of relevant literature and group discussion. Literature and discussion in the tutorials will support student's development of individual assessment items.

Requisites

OCCT4111 Pre-Requisite and requirements for Bachelor of Occupational Therapy 10792.

Assumed Knowledge

Satisfactory completion of all courses in the previous 3 years of the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy.
