Upon completion of the course theory and practice, students should be able to, on a basic level:
1. Work effectively in a group
2. Assess and analyse occupational performance tasks and components in relation to the environment
3. Plan, implement and evaluate occupational therapeutic intervention with clients where person-environment-occupation mismatch occurs
4. Apply a model of practice to guide the above process
5. Apply appropriate educational principles when assisting clients to improve occupational performance
6. Select work, recreational and domestic activities appropriate to the needs and abilities of the client
7. Demonstrate ability and creativity to utilise a range of media for therapeutic purposes
8. At all times demonstrate awareness of safe lifting and handling techniques, including safe transfer of clients during fieldwork.

Fixed Resource Stream (lectures)
There will be a series of fixed resource sessions on aspects of occupational theory as it relates to professional practice, evaluation processes, and intervention strategies with clients whose primary diagnosis is physical dysfunction. As students will be undertaking a professional placements throughout the year, the emphasis will be on occupational health practice for clients as well as for students as workers.







Laboratories
The laboratories will be run to complement the course topics and are designed to teach specific intervention strategies or professional skills. The laboratories allow students to experience specific treatments and to experiment with equipment and techniques in a supervised environment, and to prepare students for their professional placement experience. It is therefore important that students attend sessions to maximise their opportunities to learn. Students need to be adequately prepared for their placement experience, and the basic evidence provided of this preparation is attendance at laboratory sessions.

Tutorials
The tutorials are based upon a case study, which has been chosen to highlight major assessment and intervention areas in which an occupational therapist might be involved.
The tutorials are designed around problem based learning and will allow students to experience group learning and group process. It is assumed that each member of the group undertakes responsibility for his/her own learning. In addition, the tutorials challenge each individual to accept responsibility for the groups learning as a whole.
It is therefore essential that all students must attend each session. Student absences from sessions require the submission of a Special Consideration form and accompanying documentation.

Professional Placement
