Assessment: The Neonate, Child, Young Person & Family

In this course students review and enhance their skills and knowledge in assessing the neonate, child and younger person (hereafter called the child) and their families. Nursing assessment is explored and investigated with opportunity provided to establish individual learning needs specific to each students clinical context. Students are required to respond to clinical scenarios through critical analysis and reflection.

ObjectivesCompletion of this course will enable students to:

1. Identify and reflect on the assessment needs of the child and family as a unit;
2. Identify a range of assessment frameworks applicable to the child and family in a variety of situations;
3. Critically analyse the assessment needs of a child and family in a variety of situations and
4. Identify the assessment needs of a child and family, and implement and evaluate the outcome of using an assessment framework applicable to those needs.
ContentThe concept of assessment of the child and their family is introduced along with frameworks for assessment. Problem based learning principles are applied to clinical scenarios in child and youth health nursing which explore the following.

Module 1: Family Centred Care
This module will include the following:
What is assessment?;
Frameworks for assessment;
The role of family centred care in assessment
Communication skills within the context of assessment;
The integration of cultural issues, mutual dialogue and negotiation in the assessment process.

Module 2: An Introduction to Assessment of the Child and Family
This module will include the following:
Assessment of the family
Assessment of the well child
Newborn assessment
Adolescent assessment
Complex, challenging assessment of a child and his or her family.
Assessment of child abuse/neglect.

Assumed KnowledgeFoundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology and sociology as related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgement, synthesis and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice. Demonstrated ANC competencies.
