This course, professional development in a practice context, promotes professional development in the specialist nurse through the attainment of knowledge and skills in reflective practice as an integral component of their clinical practice in order to facilitate their ongoing development as a specialist nurse practitioner. Underpinning this course is the Competency Standards for the Advanced Practice Nurse (Australian Nursing Federation, 1997). The course content aims to stimulate enquiry in relation to the competency domains. These domains include: professional practice, reflective practice, empowerment, clinical problem solving, teamwork and leadership.

Objectives
On completion of the course students will:

1. Critique and defend the concept, clinical practice is grounded in sound theoretical knowledge that promotes nursing practice through the appraisal, utilisation, and dissemination and where possible the conduct of research to ensure optimal care delivery practices based on evidence based practice.
2. Analyse the relationship between practice and theoretical knowledge, using reflective practice that demonstrates achievement of the advanced practice nursing competencies (generic and/or specialty specific)
3. Is able to critically reflect on own practice and significant nursing issues using the advanced nurse practice competencies to identify areas requiring professional learning and development of self and actively engages in activities to promote self development.
4. Examine the use of reflection on action, and reflection in action as a mode of professional development and defend the need for an understanding of reflective practice in nursing.
5. Engages in professional activities. Demonstrates an awareness of the role of an advanced practice nurse in relation to nursing leadership, collegial support, and development of self and others through active education and dissemination of information.

Assumed Knowledge: Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice.
Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues.
Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis and evaluation.
Ability to conceptualise practice.
Demonstrated Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council competencies.
