This course will provide Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) students with the opportunity to develop their scope of practice as an essential part of the clinical governance framework. Students will examine legal, ethical and cultural frameworks and the place of the nurse practitioner in the structure of modern healthcare. The development of clinical guidelines is a means of translating research into practice with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes and optimising client care. Students in this course will critical appraise the use of clinical guidelines in their specialty practice.
This course will provide students from other Master of Nursing programs with the opportunity to explore the nature and sources of evidence which underpins nursing practice and critically appraise one topic of clinical interest in depth. Through the development of advanced search strategy skills, students in this course will formulate a scholarly review of the literature which will prepare them for a clinical project or clinical skills development to be undertaken in NURS6622 Contract Learning B.
| Objectives | On completion of this course Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) students will: 1 Demonstrate a sound knowledge of a selected area of advanced practice based on critical analysis and synthesis of the literature relevant to their scope of practice; 2. Define and describe their scope of practice informed by a critique of the literature and an examination of the context of their practice; 3. Critically analyse key issues associated with legal, ethical, cultural practices and professional boundaries relevant to NP practice in Australia; 4. Evaluate clinical practice guidelines that are relevant to nurse practitioner practice; 5. Critically analyse key issues encountered when implementing of clinical guidelines (potential benefits, limitations and harm); and 6. Provide a clear, concise and scholarly presentation commensurate with postgraduate level studies. By the end of this course all other Master of Nursing students should be able to: 1 Demonstrate a sound knowledge of a selected area of advanced practice based on a critical analysis and synthesis of a clinical issue or practice concern; 2. Develop advanced search strategy skills for use in a review of current literature; 3. Critically analyse the use of nursing/medical research to inform clinical practice; 4. Articulate the rationale for inclusion/exclusion of nursing/medical research in the development of the final literature review; and 5. Develop a clear, concise and scholarly presentation commensurate with postgraduate level studies. |

| Content | Course content will depend on the students program of enrolment. Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) students will cover the following topics in the course: 1. Advanced literature searching skills /critical appraisal of current literature to provide a sound knowledge base relevant to the students scope of practice; 2. Key issues associated with scope of practice using available literature and the principles of evidence based practice; 3. The political and socio-cultural factors that influence scope of practice, policy and legislation governing clinical practice and professional boundaries; 4. Issues associated with the implementation and evaluation of clinical practice guidelines; and 5. Guidelines for the development of a scholarly presentation commensurate with postgraduate level studies. Students enrolled in other Masters Programs will cover the following topics in the course: 1. An exploration of current literature to provide a sound knowledge base for a selected area of advanced practice from their specialty area of practice; 2. Advanced search strategy skills for use in a review of current literature; 3. Key issues associated with the use of evidence based principles to assess nursing/medical research to inform clinical practice; 4. Reading literature for academic purpose /and for the development of an academic argument 5. Guidelines for the development/presentation of a comprehensive literature review commensurate with postgraduate level studies. |

| Assumed Knowledge | Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis and evaluation. Competent use of an electronic citation manager e.g. EndNote ESSENTIAL SKILLS: - Master of Nursing Nurse Practitioner students must complete NURS6620 prior to NURS6621 Contract Learning A. - Master of Nursing Nurse Practitioner students are advised to study PHAR6701 concurrently with NURS6621 |
