Using midwifery and collaborative models of care students continue workforce clinical experience and continue their established 1-2-1 relationships. This course builds on Midwifery Practice 1 & 2 and develops knowledge and skills in caring for women and babies who are unwell or have problems during the childbearing year. Students will use knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacology, haemodynamic management, medical and surgical emergencies in maternity care in combination with critical reflection and best-evidence practice guidelines. Students apply knowledge of inheritance to understand genetic diseases and their transmission. Identification and care for babies with medical conditions are presented.
| Objectives | Upon completion of the learning activities for this course, supported by appropriate use of the literature & self directed study the student will be able to work collaboratively with others to: 1. Apply appropriate theories and use an evidence-based approach to practice while working with women during pregnancy, labour and while giving birth and in the postpartum time, including women and babies with complex care needs; 2. Reflect on midwifery and other health practices and intgrate reflection into practice; 3. Demonstrate the ability to consult with women to develop and implement a health care plan for them and their babies being cognizant of the needs of their families and significant others; 4. For those seeking initial registration as a midwife, demonstrate progress towards, achieving midwifery competence by successfully undertaking assessments based on the Competencies for the midwife required by the appropriate registering authority - Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and by demonstrating mastery of specified midwifery skills. |

| Content | Self development; impact of family and environment on childbearing; women with medical conditions: type 1 diabetes, thrombosis, pulmonary embolus and amniotic fluid embolus, heart disease, asthma and puerperal sepsis. Women who misuse substances. Breech, brow, face and shoulder presentation; episiotomy and perineal repair. The on-line resources and work, suggested readings, planned face to face sessions, theoretical assessments and ongoing clinical midwifery component for this course are designed to facilitate midwifery work with all women, especially those with complex needs. Students will also facilitate the acquisition of midwifery knowledge and skills to care for premature, small and ill babies in the immediate and short term. At the commencement of the course students will be provided with a timetable outlining specific issues to be addressed. Students are encouraged to prepare for on-line work by pre-reading literature related to the issues outlined in the timetable. | Assumed Knowledge | All students enrolled in this course must have a current authority to practice as a registered nurse and participate in midwifery clinical practice. This course builds on knowledge and skills developed in the courses Midwifery Practice 1 and 2 and Midwifery Practice Issues. For those students requiring clinical experience,there must be evidence of screening and vaccinations against infectious diseases as required for health professionals in NSW health facilities. |
