Using a midwifery conceptual model students engage in supernumerary practice, including forming 1-2-1 relationship for 7-10 women. During these experiences students develop an understanding of normal, physiological pregnancy, birth, lactation and postnatal adaptation and how best to promote normal birth. Learning includes anatomy, physiology, fetal development, screening and diagnostic tests and antenatal care. Students integrate learning about health assessment, cultural safety, psychology, teaching in the clinical environment and basic counselling skills to be able to care for well women and their babies across the childbearing year.
Upon completion of the learning activities for this course, supported by appropriate use of the literature & self directed study the student will be able to:
1.Describe the anatomy and physiology of the woman and fetus as it relates to pregnancy, birth and postpartum;
2.Using a doll and pelvis demonstrate the mechanisms of labour for vertex presentations;
3.Describe the anatomy and physiology of lactation;
4.Describe the critical phases of fetal development and the potential effects of micro-organisms and un-healthy substances may affect the fetus;
5.Describe antenatal care for well women and the midwifery advice appropriate for minor disorders of pregnancy;
6.Using research evidence and the experiences of women discuss the benefits and disadvantages of screening and diagnostic tests in pregnancy;
7.Ask women about psycho-social vulnerabilities in a sensitive and appropriate manner;
8.Critically discuss the interconnectedness of biological, emotional, social, environmental and spiritual processes involved in birthing, breastfeeding and early parenting for well women, their babies and families;
9.Using scientific evidence and the wisdom of women, create and maintain environments that women and babies find optimal for biological, emotional, social and spiritual functioning;
10.Provide sensitive and evidence-based postnatal care to well women and babies including support to breastfeed using the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding;
11.Provide sensitive education about family planning including for woman who are breastfeeding.
12.Observe, participate in and reflect upon preparation for childbirth groups and midwifery practice generally.
Developing relationships with women during pregnancy; anatomy and physiology; mechanism of normal labour; fetal development; teratogenesis; antenatal care; minor disorders of pregnancy; screening and diagnostic tests in pregnancy; preparation for parenthood; breastfeeding; psychosocial vulnerability; impact of environment on childbearing and review family planning. At the commencement of the course you will be provided with a timetable outlining specific issues to be addressed. Students are encouraged to prepare for on-line work by pre-reading literature related to the issues outlines in the timetable.
All students enrolled in this course must have a current authority to practice as a registered nurse and observe/participate in midwifery clinical practice.
For those students requiring clinical experience, there must be evidence of screening and vaccinations against infectious diseases as required for all health professionals in NSW health facilities.
