International and national policies focus on effective delivery of mental health services with an emphasis on community based care. This course examines historical perspectives that have led to the current policy directions and current and emerging models of care for mental health care delivery. Students will develop an enhanced understanding of the scope and roles available for mental health nurses. The implementation of evidence-based care, challenges and barriers and ethical dilemmas encountered in mental health nursing in community settings are examined in depth. The course provides the opportunity for students to examine the personal and professional issues that they will need to address to work effectively in community settings.

Objectives - Demonstrate an understanding of the historical background to current community mental health care
- Understand the population health model and how it informs delivery of care
- Describe and critique current policy directives related to the integration of mental health into primary care
- Develop a broader understanding of the scope of and roles for mental health nursing in the community, including promotion and prevention
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to critique different models of care as applied in community settings,
- Critically examine future directions in community mental health
- Identify barriers to effective implementation of evidence-based services
- Examine ethical dilemmas, issues related to cultural safety and vulnerable populations (such as Indigenous Australians) relevant to the delivery of care in community settings
- Examine personal and professional capacity to work collaboratively with both health care and non-government service providers

5. Professional, personal, ethical and legal issues related to mental health nursing in community settings.
Replacing Course(s) NURS6091 Community Mental Health Nursing
Transition Students who completed NURS6091 Community Mental Health Nurse in 2010 cannot enrol in this course. Students who completed NURS6091 prior to 2010 are able to enrol in this course.

Assumed Knowledge Foundations of nursing knowledge, nursing theory, legal and ethical issues, fundamentals of research, human bioscience, psychology, sociology related to practice. Principles of investigative approaches in nursing, concepts and theories relevant to practice, contemporary nursing issues. Academic reading and writing skills, ability to access and evaluate information from a variety of sources, skills in critical analysis, critical judgment, synthesis and evaluation. Ability to conceptualise practice. Demonstrated Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council competencies.
