Gender is an important determinant of health. This course will examine gendered heath issues as they impact on people across their lifespan and in different communities. It focuses on health promotion, and the prevention of disease and illness. The nurse will be located in contemporary society as an essential part of the complex health care of children, youth and families.
| Objectives | Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to: * Gendered health issues across the lifespan in Australia and internationally * The issues and challenges related to child, youth and family health care * Effective engagement with children, young people and families in the community and in a range of practice settings * The law concerning family violence, child abuse and neglect * The environmental risks and protective factors for the health of men and women in Australia and internationally. |

| Content | This course comprises three modules. Each has a defined set of learning outcomes as listed below: Module 1 - Gender and health Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * Define and distinguish between the key terms of sex, gender, sexism, heterosexism * Explain gender, sexual differences and health * Debate how gender is a social determinant of health in Australia and internationally * Critically analyse gender stereotypes in different cultures and their effect on health * Discuss family violence and child abuse * Demonstrate understanding of the relevant aspects of the NSW Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act (1998) and the Children Legislation Amendment (Wood Inquiry Recommendations) Act 2009 Module 2 - Child, youth and family health Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * discuss the role of the nurse in health promotion and illness prevention when caring for children, young people and families in different practice contexts * demonstrate an understanding of the therapeutic communication skills required when working with children, young people and families during times of stress and illness * Discuss adolescent health risks and service provision in Australia * Demonstrate an understanding of the transition to parenthood in contemporary society. Module 3- Womens' and mens' health Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * Identify health risks to women in contemporary society * Discuss the health care needs of women and girls across the life span * Identify health risks to men and boys in contemporary society * Discuss the health care needs of men and boys across the life span. |
