Care of the Compromised Neonate

This course is designed to equip the novice midwife or nurse with the skills and knowledge required to initiate appropriate care and manage a baby born with complex neonatal needs in any maternity setting. Students will gain knowledge related to care of the neonate including ensuring thermoregulation, adequate oxygenation, maintaining normoglycaemia, intra-gastric feeding, initiation and maintenance of lactation and breastfeeding and supporting parents. Issues including communication and referral processes, stabilisation, maintaining and transferring compromised newborns will be explored. The care required by neonates with complex needs on transition back to a maternity unit will be discussed. The role of the midwife or nurse in supporting the mother, father and family and promoting attachment and bonding with the compromised newborn is highlighted.

Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will have the ability to:
* Apply knowledge about neonatal circulation and the changes that normally occur in the first few hours after birth
* Apply knowledge about neonatal needs for thermoregulation, nutrition (including breastfeeding), safety and love
* Initiate basic neonatal resuscitation
* Assist with advanced life support, including intubation, medications and insertion of umbilical venous catheter
* Initiate and assist with the stabilisation of the compromised neonate, including the administration of IV fluids and medications
* Maintain the health status of the compromised neonate prior to and during transfer
* Provide transitional care of neonates with complex needs in a rural hospital
* Use professional communication skills in referral and documentation
* Provide breastfeeding support to the woman and baby when the newborn is compromised
* Demonstrate advanced interpersonal skills when listening and responding to distressed parents

Clinical MIDWIFERY STUDENTS - will do their clinical practice associated with the theory and clinical labs of this course in MIDI3103
NURSING STUDENTS - cannot be guaranteed a clinical placement in nursery.
Group/tutorial participation and contribution Participation at tutorials is essential for passing this course. Tutorial provide educational experiences aimed at changing student knowledge, attitudes and skills so as to enable student to safely and effectively interact with women and their families in ways that are physically, emotionally, socially and culturally safe.

Non participation will lead to failure in this course unless adverse circumstances are granted.
Laboratory Exercises COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT
Clinical Laboratories - Neonatal Resuscitation and assistance in Intubation OSCA

100% attendance, laboratory preparation and satisfactory performance is required in Clinical Laboratories. Attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant clinical skills.

Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstance form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.

Failure to attend 100% will result in a FAIL for this course.

100% Mastery of medication calculations

Students will be provided with two opportunities to demonstrate mastery (inclusive of original and 1 attempt). Failure to achieve mastery will result in FF grade for this course.

Requisite by Enrolment Enrolment in Bachelor of Midwifery or Bachelor of Nursing program.
A pass or higher grade in all 1000 level courses
Compulsory Course Component To be awarded a pass or higher grade in this course each student is required to:
* Submit all assessment items
* Gain an aggregate of 50% or higher for assessment items
* 100% mastery of medication calculations
* Complete the total number of laboratory hours and demonstrate satisfactory performance
* Participate in online tutorials
