This course is premised on the belief that effective leadership and clinical teaching can transform practice. It examines theories relevant to adult learning, leadership, mentorship, preceptorship and clinical supervision. Students will be provided with opportunities to integrate this knowledge into their own clinical practice and to reflect on and learn from this experience.
ObjectivesStudents who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to: * leadership in the contemporary health care environment * adult learning principles and clinical teaching practices * mentorship, precentorship and clinical supervision | ||
ContentModule 1 - Leadership * discuss the characteristics and utility of different leadership styles * demonstrate understanding of the leadership role of the nurse/midwife in the current Australian health care context * engage in self-reflection as a process to enhance one's understanding of their personal styles of communication * identify how organisational cultures and management styles impact on communication, staff satisfaction, stress, morale, motivation and performance * demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of conflict and how conflict is manifested in organisational contexts Module 2 - Clinical teaching Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * explain how adult leaning theories can be used in clinical teaching * undertake self-evaluation of your own learning style * identify a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to the goals and context of the teaching session * apply adult learning principles to an episode of clinical teaching Module 3- Mentoring, preceptoring and clinical supervision Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * define the roles and discuss the characteristics of effective mentors and preceptors * demonstrate understanding of the principles and practice of effective clinical supervision | ||
