This course comprises of four modules. Each has a defined set of learning outcomes as listed below:
Theme 1 - Professional Practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the Aged Care Act 1997 and the Australian government's policies and the system of health care service delivery for older people in Australia
* demonstrate an understanding of the legal principles relating to relevant aspects of the NSW Guardianship Act (1987) to the care of older people.
* demonstrate an understanding of the relevant legislation related to the use of restraint and mandatory reporting of elder abuse
* demonstrate an understanding relevant common law and legislation relating to the end-of-life care planning including advance care directives and advance care planning.
* explore the ethical concept of decision making capacity using Socratic dialogue

Theme 2- Critical thinking and analysis
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* identify situations where older people are subject to ageist attitudes and behaviours
* demonstrate an understanding of the demographic and epidemiological trends in ageing
* demonstrate an understanding of current theories related to the concepts of ageing, healthy ageing, ageism, illness transitions and frailty
* outline the risk factors and pathophysiology of dementia, delirium, depression, malnutrition, dehydration, incontinence, fractured neck of femur, diabetes type 2, Parkinson's disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and chronic wounds in older people

Theme 3- Provision and coordination of care
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* use the clinical reasoning cycle to explore clinical situations that are focused on caring for older people.
* use a person-centred approach to explore clinical situations that are focused on caring for older people.
* apply the concepts of healthy ageing, illness transitions and frailty in the care of older people and minimize the impact of ageism
* use a structured evidence-based assessment framework in collecting data about the physical, socio-cultural and psychological health of older persons who are experiencing health decline.
* demonstrate skills and knowledge in the education of older persons and their significant others in relation to disease self management and healthy ageing

Theme 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* demonstrate an understanding of person-centred older person care
* apply a quality use of medicines framework to the care of the older person
* demonstrate therapeutic communication when supporting individuals dealing with grief, loss and bereavement
* identify alternative communication strategies for individuals who are unable to communicate effectively, in particular those who have impaired cognition or dysphasia
* identify therapeutic communication strategies that are appropriate for family or significant others involved in the care of the older person
* identify strategies to maximise continuity of care of the older person across different health care settings.

Nursing Therapeutics and Aged Clients (NURS2193)

NURS2193 will be offered online in 2012 and 2013 for part time students and those who fail and need to repeat.
