Nursing Therapeutics & Medications

Develops the concepts of therapeutic care and prudence in the quality use of medications. Central to this is the development of ways of learning about pharmacology that inform nursing practice.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

Objectives Completing the learning activities for this course should enable the student to:
1. Discuss the national, state and local contexts for the quality use of medications;
2. Describe the roles and role relationships for the people involved in using medications;
3. Apply legal and policy requirements for the safe use of medications;
4. Develop an understanding of medications that includes non prescribed, recreational, prescribed, alternative and complementary options;
5. Demonstrate behaviours that acknowledge the client as the central focus;
6. Assess, administer and evaluate the use of medications;
7. Demonstrate mastery in oral medication administration;
8. Apply a continuous quality improvement framework to the management of medication incidents;
9. Reflect on practice to identify learning goals for subsequent clinical experiences;
10. Apply an evidenced-based approach to the nursing care for clients using medications; and
11. Develop and demonstrate group work skills.
