This course provides the clinical foundations to the care of adults and children across a range of contexts.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

Objectives
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to:
* Professional practice
* Critical thinking and analysis
* Provision and coordination of care
* Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Content
This course comprises four modules. Each has a defined set of learning outcomes as listed below:

Module 1 - Professional Practice
Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate that they:
* practice in accordance with legal, professional and ethical nursing frameworks
* perform nursing interventions in accordance with recognised standards of practice

Module 2 - Critical thinking and analysis
Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate that they:
* practice within an evidence based framework

Module 3 - Provision and coordination of care
Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate that they:
* use the clinical reasoning cycle as a structured approach to client care
* use a range of techniques, including observation, interview, physical assessment, mental status examination and collection of a client history to conduct a comprehensive nursing assessment

Module 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate that they:
* establish therapeutic relationships while maintaining professional boundaries
* apply a quality use of medicines framework to ensure the safe administration of medications
* establish positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues
* use verbal and electronic communication skills effectively
* use ergonomic principles to prevent injury and promote client comfort
* adhere to occupational health and safety legislation

COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT
To be eligible to attend clinical placement 100% attendance and satisfactory performance is required in Clinical Laboratories. Attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant clinical skills and medication related knowledge.
Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstances form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.

Failure to attend 100% of clinical lab will result in either cancellation or delay of clinical placement. The course coordinator will file the attendance records with the CAR.

To pass this course a total of 50% or higher must be gained
Practicum/Placement
COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT:
Students must pass this component in order to pass the course

Clinical placement attendance provides opportunities for the development of clinical assessment and medication related skills. Satisfactory performance provides evidence of skills achievement. Failure to attend or to demonstrate satisfactory performance will result in a FF grade for this course.

A student whose performance is either unsafe or unprofessional will be given an FF grade for this course.

Students assessed with unsatisfactory performance from clinical placement will be referred to the Clinical Committee who will advise if remediation and a makeup placement is to be offered.

Evidence of satisfactory clinical placement attendance is a requirement. Satisfactory clinical performance and mastery of core skills must be achieved for a pass or higher grade within this course. The course coordinator will file the attendance records with the CAR.
Quiz - Tutorial
COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT
Drug Dosage Quiz - requires 100% mastery in medication calculation. Medication calculations skills are essential for safe clinical practice.
Students will be provided with two opportunities to demonstrate mastery (inclusive of original and 1 attempt). Failure to achieve mastery will result in a FF grade for this course.
