This course provides the theoretical foundations to the nursing care of adults and children across a range of clinical contexts. Scenarios based on infection, inflammation, degeneration and injury will provide a platform for the development of critical thinking related to assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care; as well as safe and effective medication practices. Research, relevant legal and ethical principles are integral to this course.
This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program.

| Content | This course comprises four modules. Each has a defined set of learning outcomes as listed below: Module 1 - Professional Practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * explore the ethical concepts of consent and autonomy using Socratic dialogue * demonstrate understanding of the relevant common law and legislation relating to consent, assault and child protection Module 2- Critical thinking and analysis Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * outline the pathophysiology of selected infective, inflammatory, degenerative and injurious conditions * discuss the psychological impact of these conditions on the client, their family and their community * debate the significance and impact of evidence-based practice in nursing * develop skills in effective data base searching * discuss the association of epidemiology to Australia's National Health Priorities Module 3- Provision and coordination of care Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * use the clinical reasoning cycle to explore selected clinical scenarios * use a structured evidence-based assessment framework in collecting data about the physical, socio-cultural and mental health of individuals with health breakdown Module 4 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice Successful completion of this module will enable you to: * discuss strategies to facilitate a physical, psychosocial, cultural environment that promotes individual/group safety and security * discuss alternative therapeutic communication strategies for individuals who are unable to communicate effectively, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups * demonstrate clinical communication skills that allow for changes in the individual's condition to be conveyed accurately and succinctly to other members of the health care team. |
