Introduction to Health Clinical Practice

In this course the concept of providing evidence of competence is explored as students are introduced to nursing competency standards, law, ethics and the clinical skills required for safety within the clinical context. Students are also provided with an introduction to academic principles and conduct.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing program

ObjectivesCompleting the learning activities for this course should enable students to:
1. Apply principles of integrity, honesty and respect for knowledge to academic activities;
2. Understand the application of legal and ethical concepts to clinical practice;
3. Demonstrate competent performance of basic clinical skills required for safe practice;
4. Demonstrate knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and requirements;
5. Develop information literacy skills; and
6. Describe the professional competencies of nursing.
ContentThis course is comprised of five learning modules:
Module 1: Introductory academic skills, information technology, critical appraisal of literature, academic writing, and academic integrity.
Module 2: Australian Nursing and Midwifery Competency Standards and clinical portfolios.
Module 3: Health law and ethics.
Module 4: Occupational health and safety in the clinical environment, including infection control and exposure prone procedures;
