Recent research has shown that whereas the general public know a lot about major health problems such as cancer and heart disease, they lack the same degree of knowledge about mental disorders. Mental health literacy refers to knowledge and beliefs about mental health problems and disorders which aid in their recognition, management and prevention. Mental health first aid, which is the first aid help given to a person experiencing a mental health problem, has been proposed as one approach to improving mental health literacy in the general public and among health professionals. This course introduces the concepts of mental health literacy and mental health first aid and provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide mental health first aid.
