This course prepares nursing and midwifery students for their roles as knowledgeable and skilled health care professionals. It provides an introduction to and foundation for critical thinking and competent clinical practice.

This course is a Compulsory Program Component and students must pass in order to progress in the Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor Midwifery programs

Objectives
Students who successfully complete this course will have demonstrated knowledge, skills and understanding integral to:
* Critical thinking and analysis
* Professional practice
* Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Content
This course comprises three modules. Each has a defined set of learning outcomes as listed below:
Theme 1 - Critical thinking and analysis
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:

* think, read, write, listen, discuss and reason critically (at a beginning level)
* use relevant literature and research findings to support your learning and future practice.

Theme 2- Professional practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:

* discuss factors at an introductory level, that enhance or detract from quality and safety in healthcare
* examine the legal and ethical implications of selected clinical scenarios
* outline how nursing or midwifery philosophies, theories, models and frameworks guide
contemporary practice
* identify personal factors related to health and well-being that may impact on being fit for practice

Theme 3 - Collaborative and therapeutic practice
Successful completion of this module will enable you to:
* demonstrate a beginning understanding of the concept of person-centred care
* demonstrate the principles and practices of therapeutic communication
* demonstrate aggression minimisation strategies
* demonstrate infection control and occupational health and safety principles and practices

Transition
NURS1171 and NURS1181 will be offered online in 2011 and 2012 for part-time students and those who fail and need to repeat.

Students who have previously undertaken NURS1171 & NURS1181, are not eligible enrol in this course. Only students from the Bachelor of Nursing Program (11725) and the Bachelor of Midwifery Program (12200) are eligible to enrol in this course.

Completion of Academic Integrity Module -The module is to be completed by the end of week 4 of the student's first semester of enrolment. This module provides foundational academic referencing skills. Grades will not be released until this module is completed.

COMPULSORY COURSE COMPONENT:
100% Clinical Laboratory attendance - attendance is essential preparation for clinical practice and provides relevant OH&S knowledge and skills.

Students may be given the opportunity for a makeup laboratory if an adverse circumstance form is submitted and approved by the course coordinator.

Failure to attend will result in a FF grade for this course.
