Sports Nutrition

Sports Nutrition is the study of nutrition and exercise in promotion of health, and prevention and management of disease process for groups with specific nutrient needs. Applied exercise science is integrated with nutrition and dietetics

Objectives
As a result of successfully completing this course, students should be able to:
1. Critically examine the current sports nutrition literature and be able to generate practical advice for athletes
2. Appropriately assess the nutritional needs of athletes.
3. Formulate an appropriate diet plan for an athlete to enhance performance and optimise health.
4. Recommend appropriate dietary advice for athletes with therapeutic dietary requirements.
5. Critically examine the appropriate use of nutritional supplements and ergogenic aids for athletes.
Content
1. The nutritional assessment of athletes
2. Energy, protein and carbohydrate requirements for athletes
3. Nutritional needs for training, competition and recovery.
4. Nutritional requirements for athletes at different stages of the lifecycle and for athletes with special needs.
5. Exercise related nutritional deficiencies.
6. Dietary supplements and ergogenic aids.
7. Dietary extremism in the sporting community.
8. Nutrition for specific sports and environmental conditions.
