Advanced Studies in Western Music

Provides instruction in three broad areas building on the skills and understanding established in the preceding courses. Studies in harmony provide additional extension regarding harmonic structure, rhythm and style with advanced chromatic techniques studied. Aural studies increase the broadening awareness and development of pitch, rhythm and chordal structures. Music research offers discussion of musical style through one or more seminar electives. The content is delivered through lectures and seminars.

Objectives
1. To further extend and broaden the students understanding of the development of the western tonal idiom.

2. To further extend the developing harmonic idiom, functional voice-leading and repertoire analytic techniques through both written and aural methodologies.

3. To further extend the development, using aural and written methodologies, of concepts of pitch, melody, rhythm, and triadic and chordal structures.

4. To undertake music research as it applies to practical music-making and develop music research through performance (dependant upon elective).

5. At the conclusion of the semester, the student will be able to write and recognize (both aurally and from a printed score) an extensive range of the major harmonic tools of western tonal music. The student will have an understanding of the music area(s) researched.

6. Sight-Singing milestones. Sight-singing is introduced and developed through the use of two milestones: Sight-Singing milestone #1 and Sight-Singing milestone #2. Each milestone is delivered as one semester of lectures with a final examination. A pass in the examination indicates the milestone has been reached successfully. Sight-singing milestone #1 may be completed concurrently with MUSI 1630, MUSI 1631, MUSI 1632, MUSI 2631, MUSI 2632, MUSI 3631 or MUSI 3632. Sight-singing milestone #2 may be completed concurrently with MUSI 1631, MUSI 1632, MUSI 2631, MUSI 2632, MUSI 3631 or MUSI 3632.

Sight-Singing milestone #1 introduces students to sight singing by establishing the concepts of correct pitch, intervals and melodic line over a simple harmonic base.

Sight-Singing milestone #2 furthers the student?s ability to sight-sing melodies of increasing difficulty and complexity.
Content
Advanced Studies in Western music provides for:
1. Advanced development of music theory.
2. Advanced development of harmonic procedures including voice-leading, harmonic rhythm and analysis.
3. Advanced development regarding concepts (aural and written) of pitch, rhythm, triads and chords.
4. Advanced development of music research, writing, analysis and seminar presentation through student elected research areas. The research will pursue a wide range of contexts.

Studies in Western Music 5 (either MUSI 3601 OR MUSI 3631) or BOTH Materials of Music 5 (MUSI 3210) AND Musicology 5 (MUSI 3410). The course assumes an understanding of music notation software (named specifically in the course outline).
