Creative and Analytical Studies in Music 5

This is the fifth in a series of five courses that aim to develop skills and
the understanding of musical organisation, structures and techniques, shared
musical vocabularies, musical representation and communication. Examples
from a wide diversity of musical styles and periods are presented. The
course also provides the opportunity to apply these tools and abilities
creatively in any genre or era as defined by the interest of the student.

Performers/composers/producers in the 21st century need to be adaptable to
different contexts and inventive with their performance and repertoire. This
course particularly focuses on arrangement, orchestration, reinterpretation
and repertoire creation, using traditional and non-traditional approaches to
music and sound making.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will:
1. demonstrate skills in score organisation and analysis
2. demonstrate knowledge of instrumental and vocal characteristics
3. demonstrate ability to manipulate timbre and/or texture, structure and sound using score and/or technology based processes
4. demonstrate ability to arrange existing repertoire into new contexts
5. demonstrate ability to compare and evaluate stylistic differences
through analysis
Content Content includes lectures and tutorials on orchestration and arrangement, instrumental characteristics, sound and acoustics, digital manipulation and other topics related to repertoire re-interpretation and invention.

Transition Course will need to be offered in semester 2, 2006 to allow students in existing course to complete their degree. From this point, the course will only be offered in the first semester of each year.
