Available in 2013

Newcastle City Precinct Semester 1

Previously offered in 2011, 2009

This course focuses on development of performance and analytical skills in the jazz idiom through a study of style, techniques, performance and accompaniment characteristics and improvisation techniques. Students will develop an understanding of theory and musical direction/arrangement appropriate to the style.

Objectives At the successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1.recognise and correctly perform different jazz music styles
2.read and interpret song scores and perform from them appropriately on their individual instrument
3.creatively interpret basic arrangements of standard pieces
4.improvise over chord changes, correctly applying basic scales and modes
5.demonstrate control over tone and sound production
6.analyse jazz songs from scores and recordings
Content The course covers performance, improvisation, and accompaniment techniques studied through an exploration of various idioms from jazz. The harmonic language associated with jazz styles will be a major focus of this course. The skill in using this harmonic language will be developed through reading from chord charts and a further extension of improvisation where little or no assistance is given to the notated chordal structure of the melody.
