Solo and ensemble performance study in at least two different styles c.1700-1780. Students in a wide range of instruments including voice may enrol. The course gives the opportunity for keyboard students to study harpsichord and/or fortepiano; baroque brass, etc. The course will involve detailed study, analysis and performance of works from the chosen periods or styles, including improvisation and continuo playing; and performance techniques specific to the aims of historically informed performance.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to
* integrate historical style awareness in their performance
* apply principles from historical performance treatises
* distinguish national and period styles within the 18th century music
* apply this knowledge of commonly used repertoire areas as relevant to their principal instrument
* perform ensemble music of this period with appropriate style awareness

Content

This course is presented as part of a proposal to consolidate student access to and experience in types of ensemble found especially in 17th and 18th century music. It will be taught by existing full time and fractional staff, and will make use of the collection of baroque instruments that has been built up at the Conservatorium over the years, and the extensive library collection in this field. The unit complements the academic elective, Performance Practice, from which it is distinct by the emphasis on practical performance.

Journal	End of Semester Short written submission or presentation reflecting aspects of performance research in the styles or genres which student is studying. 20% of final mark
Presentations - Group	Student Performance: Short recital involving an ensemble performance. 40% of total assessment
Presentations - Individual	Student Performance: Short recital, solo repertoire in a different style to the above; this may include the student's own ornamented version of a Da Capo aria or a slow movement of an approved work, in either notated or improvised form. 40% of total assessment This assessment profile will ensure that students exhibit both an ability to learn historical perspective in the chosen style or genre, and an ability to conceptualize their understanding of the chosen style or genre in words.
