Music and the Internet

Through a directed study of the Internet (and associated electronic technologies) students will develop an understanding of specific applications of internet-based music technology. Topics may include (but are not limited to) wave audio files, MP3 and MP4 files, Real Audio, Beatnik, iTunes, iPods, streaming audio (and their related software players), electronic print music, promotion and distribution services for musical goods using e-technologies. The course culminates with students demonstrating their knowledge of the topic by the development of internet-related content pertaining to the music industry.

Objectives By the end of this course, students will be expected to:

1. Demonstrate the skills required for the creation of Internet content with an appropriate musical orientation
2. Demonstrate proficiency at sourcing and distributing music over the Internet
3. Demonstrate an understanding of music-related e-commerce procedures on the web
4. Demonstrate advanced expertise of Internet navigation, searching and downloading of musical material
5. Demonstrate the ability to use the Internet as a communications medium for on-line discussion, email and as an information resource
Content Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Distributing music over the web
- Methods for storing music digitally
- Live musical performance broadcasts
- Web content authoring
- Logistics of multimedia material
- Music E-commerce activities
- Creating music files for use on the web

Additional study areas may include promotional activities and collaborative composition.
Replacing Course(s) This course replaces no existing courses. No courses offered within the University provides a similar focus on Music Technology applications at postgraduate level. This course will have no impact on other Faculties or Schools.

Assumed Knowledge Students undertaking this course are required to have minimum levels of computer literacy and musical ability as necessary for entry into the Master of Music Technology and Graduate Certificate in Music Technology programs. No additional assumed knowledge is required. (Further details of the levels expected are available from the program convener.)

Assessment Items
Essays / Written Assignments Assessment Item #2 (30% of total assessment) - Students will examine and develop music technology content as utilised on the internet and through its related technologies. This may include (but is not limited to) the development of audio material, music notation material, etc. This assessment item will allow the student to demonstrate their technical aptitude and creative ability. The assignment will be submitted in the form of a written report accompanied by appropriate support material (where required).
Essays / Written Assignments Assessment Item #1 (30% of total assessment) - Students will be required to undertake a number of small research and writing tasks concerning music and internet-based technology. This may include (but is not limited to) hypothetical scenarios, specific questions, music pedagogy-related concerns and/or technical issues. This may require the student to undertake experimental and/or comparitative tasks. The assignment will be submitted in the form of a written report accompanied by appropriate support material (where required).
Group/tutorial participation and contribution Assessment Item #4 (10% of total assessment) - Students will need to provide evidence of online class participation and activities from throughout the duration of the trimester. The summary should include evidence about the frequency, content and relevancy of their online contributions. This may include information from discussion forms, virtual chats sessions, email communication, etc.
Other: (please specify) Assessment Item #3 (30% of total assessment) - This task requires students to develop a body of work associated with a specific area(s) of music technology and the internet. Fields this may cover include (but are not limited to) internet music composition, music and e-commerce, internet music promotion, music education and the internet, etc. Students may be required to modify content and compile it into a cohesive form. The assessment will be submitted using an appropriate electronic medium.
